Cats Season: From Tehran’s Underground to a Global Metal Vanguard
Hailing originally from west side of Tehran’s underground scene, Cats Season is now rising as a bold new voice in the global metal landscape. Fronted by Mufasa on vocals, with Mahan and Maynard on guitars, Matin on bass, and Sina on drums; Formed with a mission to challenge the boundaries of the genre, Cats Season has quickly distinguished themselves with their raw energy and innovative approach to music and visuals.
Their story is one of artistic defiance and transformation. After a targeted raid in 2020 by religious extremists shut down their Tehran studio and destroyed their gear, the band was forced into relocation. But rather than silencing them, the event lit a fire that pushed them to take their music beyond borders.
In 2024, Cats Season released their EP, Revolution — a six-track statement of rebellion and rebirth. The EP features Grave of All Great Things, mastered by acclaimed producer Will Putney (Thy Art Is Murder, Knocked Loose), and accompanied by two striking music videos: the haunting live-performance piece for Poison directed by Ermia Ramez, and the conceptual visual for the title track Revolution directed by Mojtaba Mantreh, known for his work in top-charting Persian hip-hop.
Shortly after the EP’s release, the band was selected as one of the Top 5 artists out of 45 acts at Wacken Metal Battle West Asia, earning praise from the international jury and further validating their growing reputation on the global metal stage.
With a vision rooted in resistance and artistic freedom, Cats Season continues to challenge conventions — from their acclaimed merchandise line to their mission of reshaping how non-Western acts are perceived in the metal community. They represent a new generation of Persian youth: modern, globally aware, and uncompromising in their dedication to art and identity.
